Christmas in the Garden

© Carla Goodloe

Christmas is upon us and you haven't a clue as to what to get for your gardener. There are many new things on the market for planting, maintaining, and even pest control.

I ran across an article for a very peculiar gift idea. If you are overrun by slugs and snails, buy your honey a new robot that not only picks the slugs out of your garden, but deposits them into a compartment that allows the slugs to decompose and form methane gas. This gas makes the robot continue to work. Inventor, Owen Holland and a group of seemingly crazy inventors at the West of England University in Bristol, England, came up with the idea and they believe it has merit. Frankly, I'm not so sure I trust a machine to actually KNOW where it's going, when to stop going, and to stay in my garden and not leave the yard. They aren't that smart yet, or are they? But it would be a cool gift to have for the novelty idea. If you want more information on this idea, check out the following link. http://www.ananova.com/yournews/story/sm...

Another pest control gift is simple but an excellent tool. Buy some gardening gloves, particularly ones that can be used to squish bugs without too much hassle. If you are like me, the idea of having bug juice imbed itself in my nice cotton gloves doesn't sound to appealing.

Don't forget to get the gardening stool for the gardener in your life to sit down while handpicking pests or spraying undersides of leaves with a nice organic spray (or not, if you prefer artificial chemicals).

A nice gardening basket full of items such as a spray bottle, gloves, a small box of slug bait, bt, diatomaceous earth, and some scissors for those who aren't too squeamish to actually cut caterpillars in half.

Or better yet, get a gift certificate to a garden place that supplies pest control items. A good online place would be www.gardensalive.com or www.landscapeusa.com

You can really make a gardeners day by getting him or her something really useful where pest control is concerned. I mean, who wants another tie, or another pair of socks this year? Who wants a diamond bracelet that sits in a jewelry box unworn when you can have more fun in the garden with your new stuff? Ok, so maybe that's my idea of a good Christmas, but hey, everybody has their own quirks in life.
