Introduction to Pests

Everyone has pests. But do you know what to use to get rid of them? Do you know which are bad or good? Most people don't. I will go into detail on pests of all kinds including bugs, animals, weeds, and any other kind we come across as we trek through the world of pesky nuisances.

I'll be discussing bad pests and good pests. I will also cover the chemical methods of eradication (even though I don't condone it) as well as organic methods (which work far better and aren't as dangerous).

My focus will be on one pest per article so that I may be able to give you as much information as is necessary on it's life cycle, it's dangers or it's usefulness, and the ways to defeat them or nurture them depending on the pest.

The following is a small sampling of ideas that will get you started right away in your gardens. That is if it's not cold in your area yet. If it's cold, then you probably aren't worried about pests at this time. But you'll need it in the spring and summer months.

Did you know that if you put up birdhouses around your yard, you have instant insect killers? How about bat houses? Bats can eat thousands of bugs throughout each night.

Did you know that companion gardening actually does work? Marigolds do wonders as a border plant if strategically placed among your vegetables.

Did you know that you can plant specific crops in order to trap pests? Plant cabbage or broccoli to keep the pests off of your tomatoes.

Have you ever seen those little sticky balls that you put on fruit trees? Did you know that you can recoat them so they will last longer? How about those yellow white fly traps? You can just buy the coating and put it on any cardboard and save a little money. Stick small ones in your house plants to catch all those icky little gnats that fly around.

Stay tuned for more ideas like these throughout the year. I'll pitch some at your along the way as I teach you about each pest. Sound like a plan? Alrighty then....check back later for my next article. You won't be disappointed.

I welcome questions through email regarding any specific problems you might be having in your gardens, houseplants, lawns, etc.

Thanks and happy gardening,
