During the repavement of the garden, the bowl was given a broad, slightly raised pedestal of brick. The lions supporting the bowl sit upon an old millstone, and the bricks, which are laid on edge, fan out from the millstone. The resulting pattern is very effective and if Harold and Vita are looking down on their garden, I am certain that they are delighted with Nigel's influence. Harold and Vita weren't very fond of concrete, but it was all that their budget allowed. Of all the gardens at Sissinghurst, it is the Herb Garden that has most benefited from the stewardship of the National Trust.
