The Moat Walk is very simply planted. In springtime, the ground under the azaleas is filled with the flowers of violets and bluebells. The narrow bed at the base of the moat wall is also planted with spring flowers; along with asters for autumn blooms. Cracks in the ancient wall are planted with Corydalis lutea and Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' . Wisteria venusta and Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' are trained along the top of the wall, along with Vitus coignetiae. As you can see in the photo below, these vines spill over the wall, but they aren't allowed to swamp it. Sissinghurst's gardeners have never forgotten how highly Harold and Vita valued this Medieval relic.
