The photo above shows the yews against the South Cottage. The facade of the cottage is covered with the climbing Noisette rose 'Madame Alfred Carriere'. This hybrid had also been planted under the bedroom windows of their earlier home at Long Barn. Of all the gardens at Sissinghurst, it is the Cottage Garden which most echoes the garden which Harold and Vita had created at Long Barn. This small cottage was their real home. Harold and Vita each had a bedroom upstairs and Harold's writing room was downstairs. Vita wasn't very inclined to sit in gardens, she was more likely to be gardening, but when she sat for a moment or two, it was usually in this garden. After her death Harold often sat here; his chair still stands before the cottage door, awaiting his return.
