The Renaissance began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe; Renaissance culture was dominated by Italy, but it is a mistake to think of the Renaissance as something that erupted from the Italian soil, like Athena emerging from Zeus's forehead. The western part of the Roman Empire fell to the barbarians, but the eastern part of the Empire survived as Byzantium. The Byzantine Empire survived until 1453 when the Turks captured Constantinople. The Renaissance was a re-flowering of Classical culture from living roots. The result was not a re-creation of ancient Roman gardens; Renaissance Italians created gardens which were their own unique gifts to the world.
