Niagara

We take great pleasure in visiting certain places, even more so because of their floral displays. Some cities have taken great pains to beautify themselves with magnificent spreads of flowers, at least in summer. Then there are the places with perpetual summer. One summer delight for us is Niagara Parks and Niagara-On-The-Lake in the province of Ontario. That the Shaw Festival was in progress in Niagara-On-The-Lake made it doubly fine. Flowers in the morning, a play at night.

When we lived in Buffalo many years ago, just below the border, we noted the difference between our relatively drab city and the colorful displays of flowers along the boulevards in the center of Toronto. What a little extra effort in civic pride and application did for the city was most apparent. That the flowers were gone during the winter was no great disappointment as people either hibernated or went to Mt. Tremblant to ski. We in northern climes must indulge in continuous masses of color that only annuals can provide to compensate for our relatively abbreviated summers.

It was a pleasure to stroll the streets of Niagara-On-The-Lake, surrounded by borders of flowers and hanging baskets with more. There was a very busy woman gardener making the rounds, replacing any plant that was no longer up to snuff.

Niagara Parks also does a most wonderful floral display between Niagara Falls and Niagara-On-The-Lake. The road between them is interspersed with gardens, a Botanical Garden, a greenhouse and a Butterfly Conservatory as well as a School of Horticulture. School members take care of all the floral displays. I remember one year, in the fall, members were digging up seemingly many hundreds of canna lilies for winter storage.

The Butterfly Conservatory was, as usual, a delight.

Even our hotel was immersed in flowers.
The streets were lined with flower beds.
Annuals predominated.

I agree that the cities of Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake do a magnificent job of filling the visitors' spirits with gardens. There is such a contrast between the two sides of the Falls, Americ ...
