Valor and Pride Review

I am not easily impressed by online games these days. At least not when it comes to recommending them to my loyal readers. I have criteria that must be met. They must be free, absolutely no charge. They must be dynamic and evolving. They must have a good storyline, and inspire character development. They must, above all else, be FUN. These qualities seem rare and precious few to me these days.

My husband, Armando in real life, Archon to many online, as many of my regular readers know, is my play tester. I often send him in to scout out a game. I was rather surprised when he came up with this little gem on his own.

He has been playing this one for a few weeks, and to be honest, I had mostly been ignoring him. When he kept laughing, and seemingly having great fun, I began o get nosey. What was this game he was playing? I started asking questions. "Valor And Pride " says he, "a type of Superhero campaign", not being a huge fan of the genre, I went back to ignoring his fun.

Then, I was scouting around for a new game to review, and decided to give this one a look see. I was pleasantly surprised. It was free, good bonus, it was dynamic, two down, it certainly seemed to be inspiring his character development, and if his maniacal laughter was any indication, it was certainly fun. So I went to the website. I found it only got better. This play by email, while based around a single setting, allows the game masters to use whatever game system they feel comfortable with. GURPS, AD&D, White Wolf, Champions*, etc.

According to my husband, the individual game masters found here are incredibly good about training new players, certainly a rarity in this day and age where many new players are expected to stumble along as best they can.

So, just what is this game? It is, first and foremost, a play by email. You create a character, according to the instructions given you by your game master. Once your character is reviewed and accepted, you begin play. you email in your turns using EGroups a group emailing service, you will be invited to join your game's group once approved, at the rate of one turn a week, officially, though many people also turn in "unofficial" game and character turns in addition to their official ones.
