Halloween Special: The Horror Campaign

Ghosts, and goblins, and witches, oh my! Haloween is here, and it is time to think about scary the pants off of your party. but what makes a horror gamme REALLY scary? Settings, GM's, SETTINGS!! The right props and ambience can turn your game into one that is trully scary, not merely one that you say is scary.

Props

Where do we start then? I like to start with the props, of course. A skull shaped candle, to be lit or not, some written in "blood" scrolls" See for the directions on making one. The tea stained paper can be easily be said to be "human skin", with the right lighting and mood of course. Wear a black robe if you have one, invest in some dice with skulls on them. Pass out character sheets (if you are creating new characters) that were copied on brown, parcment looking paper, with brown pens to fill then out with. Let your imagination go wild here, but remember, don't overdue it. if your home is completely made over to look like an authentic medieval dungeon ... well, ok, I have to admit, that would impress your players, but if it is so crowded with props that your players can't roll their dice, or sit down their coffee, it is probably a bit much. A few props, and the right lighting will go a long way.

Lighting
The lighting can go a long way toward setting the mood. A few candles, make certain there is one for each player, so they can see their sheets Some hurricane lamps, especially good for ocean based horror stories. If playing outside, consider investing in tiki torches.
With any open flame, make certain your players do not get too carried away. Naturally these light sorces are best suited to older players. A nice alternative is to install a dimmer switch on your indoor lights, and turn them way down low.

Music

Selecting the right music can really top off your setting. Do not, however, go for the sound effects albums. They will cheapen your game. instead, get movie soundtracks. the most obvious choices are from scary movies, such as Halloween, Friday The 13th, Sleepy Hallow, and they do offer endless possibilities. especially if you listen to them enough to time your action scenes with music that reflects it. In addition to the classic soundtracks, I also like Conan, both movies, and for a gothic punk setting, I like any of the batman soundtracks.
