I admit to being something of a snob when it comes to role-playing games. A "true" game master to me was the slightly harried looking man saying "You do WHAT?? Roll me two die ten" These new high tech upstarts online? Well ... call them webmasters. Call them game administrators.You can call them nearly anything you'd like, but don't call them game masters, because they just are not. Or so I believed. I have had cause, of late, to revise my opinion.
My next series will deal specifically with the various forums for playing in, In this article I will discuss the tools available to the online game master. The tools available on the web are simply phenomenal. Dice rollers. Map building tools, Books to download, character generators, plus tips and techniques from the experts. Then, of course there are all of the forums available to host it. You can play by email, by messageboard, by IRC. There are almost as many ways, today, to play as there are players. From MUSH's to MUDs to free form role-playing, the possibilities are endless. The first thing any Game Master needs, as we all know are books. Where would we be without our GM guides? There are many places to download these off the web, or have them sent via snail mail. Gurps Lite Is a 32 page PDF version of the famous GURPS RPG, created and owned by Steve Jackson Games. It is completely free, and has all of the qualities of excellnece we have all come to expect from SJ Games. Hyperbooks Role Playing Games, Accessories and Software download RPG books and supplements. Including a character generator for GURPS. Now that we have our books, character sheet, we will need our accessories. Dice, maps, and theme music. Irony Games has hundreds of links to Play By Emails, an excellent dice roller that mails your player's rolls to you, a map maker to create everything from towns, to countries, to worlds. Irony Games is a must have bookmark. Effie Rover's Page Is an excellent miscellaneous resource site. Find games, use RPG search engine, buy RPG stuff. Many great links, and a lot of great information. Need Music? Of course you do, it sets the mood for a great adventure. Look no further that Sojourner. It has lots of free samples, and inexpensive CDs, specifically designed for the gamer. MUDs MUSH's and freeform all sound interesting, but you have no idea where to begin? Help is here.
