Hosting A Game

roll, some brown paint (or a bit of brown mixed with white for bone), a couple of pieces of painted brown paper ( just cut up a paperbag) fitted and tied over the ends works nicely. Need a scroll inside? Tea-dyed, stiffened white fabric, such as cotton, and written on with markers, fits the bill. Theme music? I find that movie sound tracks, such as Conan, or any Star Trek, sets the mood very well. Maps drawn on crumpled tea-dyed paper (use a heavier paper for best results) are quite popular. Encoded messages can be typed up using an unusual font (I like wingdings) then translated in various stages of being "decoded" as hand outs.

With a little imagination, a lot of communication, and a sense of humor, hosting does not have to be a major chore. Just remember, no matter your reasons for gathering, these are your guests and everyone likes to feel welcome.

A final word to the guests. Show your host you appreciate his/her efforts. Comments like "This was great!!" go a long way. So does taking a few minutes at the end of a session to help the host clean up.
