Wrap It In Fabric

insert the hardware. Secure the pulls, return the drawers, and you have a recycled piece of furniture for very little time or money!

Here are a few points to keep in mind when recycling with fabric:

1. Choose a durable fabric that can hold its shape when stretched. You frequently have to pull fairly hard on fabric to staple it in place. If the fabric you choose is easily ripped by the staples or stretches out of shape, you won't be happy with your recycling efforts.

2. Look at what will be underneath the fabric. If you choose a light-colored fabric, whatever you're covering may show through unless you either (1) first paint the area the color of your fabric, (2) use a thicker fabric to cover the area first and then top it with your chosen fabric, or (3) use multiple layers.

3. Look at what will be on top of your fabric. If you're covering something that children might use, consider how you'll clean the piece. Choose a stain-resistant fabric or one that can be spot-cleaned easily.

4. Look at what you have. Sometimes, you'll find fabric that you can use in the most unlikely places. Consider old curtains, outgrown clothes, discarded tablecloths -- look at swatches of fabric you have and see their possibilities.

Using fabric as a tool is just another way to recycle those sad-looking pieces into something functional and fun. It's inexpensive, resourceful and guaranteed to give a unique look to your next project.

Good luck!
