Snap, Crackle, Recycle!the proper base coat. With semi-gloss enamel used as both the base coat and the top coat, I got essentially the same thing -- tiny crackles -- but they didn't look right with the shine from the glossy paint. This technique demands a matte finish. When I mixed the two types of paint -- semi-gloss as the base and flat latex as the top coat and then flat latex as the base and semi-gloss as the top coat -- I basically got nothing. The chemical reaction just wasn't there. So if you do try to crackle without the appropriate base coat, remember not to mix your paint types. Happy crackling!
