Your water bill is full of lurking dollars just slipping away down your drain with the water you waste. “Me?” you
gasp, and sadly, I must say it’s true! Even if you don’t pay for your water bill because you rent, your landlord may
raise your rent to cover the rising costs of renting your property! On top of all the wonderfully frugal reasons you
should conserve water, it’s an earth friendly thing to do as well. I don’t hug trees, but I try to treat the earth as
gently as possibly. With that in mind, check out the following suggestions for saving water and money in your
home:
Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded. Set the water level for the size of load you are using. If you do bigger loads of wash and line dry them you will also save considerably on your electric bill. Store drinking water in the refrigerator. Don’t let the tap run while you are waiting for the water to get cold. Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator as this is a safer method and avoid the microwave as well (another energy sucking appliance!) Kitchen sink disposals require lots of water to operate properly. Start a compost pile as an alternate method of disposing of food waste, instead of using a garbage disposal. In addition to lower utility bills (electric and water), you’ll have plenty of good food for your garden! Water your outside plants with rain water caught in five gallon bucket placed outside. Use biodegradable dish soap and water your plants with your dish water! Be sure to read the labels prior to doing this as you wouldn’t want to inadvertently kill your plants! When landscaping, do research on the most water effective plants for your area. One of the prettiest flowers in this author’s opinion is Queen Anne’s Lace. It’s actually a weed, however it is very hardy and will not require excessive watering. The biggest water culprit in the house is sure to be your toilet! You should consider placing a brink or water filled bottle in the tank to decrease the amount of water required to flush the toilet. Check often for leaks from the tank to Go To Page: 1 2 |
