Taking Back Public Education

In my last article, I mentioned that my son had been suspended from riding the school bus, not only was he suspended, I was not given proper notice to make arrangements to be absent from work in order to transport him to and from school.

The first issue I want to put to rest is the motivation for the suspension. Was my son guilty of the infraction that prompted the suspension? Yes he was. I feel the need to explain that he is in kindergarden and that while he is six, if you put him in an out of control situation like the one that prevails on this bus, he can and will feed into the rebellion. This is the combination of his maturity level and his personality.

This was not the first incident that prompted me to become irate with the public school system. I have always tended to take a hard left and vow to move my children to private school (a luxury I can not afford with four children in school) and/or to homeschool my children.

This time I did not take a hard left, but rather decided that because I found this situation unacceptable, I was going to communicate my displeasure and diappointment in the system to the person that was in charge of the school system. I did this with result.

During the course of the meeting, the principle removed my son's suspension from the bus, despite my vehement protest that this was not in fact the issue. My issue is the fact that the children on the bus are often out of control and I was not provided with sufficient notice to make transportation arrangements for my son.

While I hold homeschoolers in VERY high regard, it is past time for the parents of public school children to take back our children's education. If there is a situation in your area school that concerns you for the safety of your child, talk to every level of authority in your district to resolve this issue. If this does not work, network with other parents and make them aware of this situation as well. A system may ignore the cries of ONE person, but when faced with a small but effective team of protesters, they will listen.

We need to stand up for our children's safety as well as the quality of education they receive. If we will not say, "This is not acceptable, it needs to change.", who will?
