Dreaming of being a stay at home mom?

© C. M Snyder

Let's take a look at the reality of trimming a two income household to a one income household. I have read at least twenty magazine articles that were so unrealistic they did not inspire me in the least that I could dream about being a stay at home mother!

Suppose for this article, my income (net) is $330.00 per week. This means my bring home pay is $17,160 .

Here are the expenses I incur for working per year:

Daycare: 5200.00 Insurance for a second car: 360.00* Gas for the car: 1040.00 Convience Foods vs Homemade: 700.00 Clothing per year: 240.00 Lunch Money 240.00

*I bartered a broken down car I got for free for one that runs.

So far, my net income for the year is: $9380.00 after expenses directly related to working outside of my home.

From this point, I would need to bring home 180.00 per week to arrive at the point where I am right now financially speaking. This means working a minimum wage position at least 32 hours a week. This is not a feasible option for me, as I would have to pay for at least one child in full time daycare. However, if I took the time and effort to market my skills as a writer and a typist, I could earn at least part of that sum and work part-time after school hours when my husband was at home. This is one option.

If I take into further consideration, that my home would be more efficient if I were here to run it full time, it would lower my utility bills and cost me less money for laundry, groceries etc. A fair market value for this effort would be 1040.00. This would require shopping intelligently (online and off), using grocery coupons and rebates (which staying home would give me the time to pursue). This brings my income down to $8340.00

My point in giving you this example, is that if you yearn to be a stay at home, sit down and be brutally honest with yourself about the following issues in your life:

What does it COST you to work? What will you have to make up for after subtracting your costs from your annual net income? What are you willing to commit to doing to make this system work? You can say that you will coupon, but if your organizational skills are poor, you more than likely will not follow through and could jeopardize your family's financial security. What lengths are you willing to go to make this dream a reality?

Is it possible for everyone to do this? Not in every case, or least not without some planning and work. By working
