I have to admit I have done my fair share of bashing the zealous frugals. Lately, since school has started and I find myself still working full time, I wonder if they know something that I do not. Perhaps if I were a lot MORE frugal than I currently am, the slim possibility exists that I could stay home or at least work only part time, and devote more time to my ever growing up family.
With this in mind I have been seriously pursuing means and ways to save money on my already miserly budget (less a little fun here and there). I have been couponing and I think that a lot of working moms could be part time workers or stay at home moms with some creativity, sacrifice and a lot of self discipline. Frugal habits are made, not inherited. Train yourself to think first of your budget when making decisions in all areas of your life. Do you NEED or only want a second car? In Florida, public transportation is not reliable and scheduled oddly at best and everything is so spread out you can not walk or bicycle to where you need to be. When we lived up North in a fairly large city a car was not necessary because one could walk to where one needed to be. The focus of my personal life has been on the following items. I choose to share them with you in the hopes that if you are working full time, but wish to be home, you might consider the following issues yourself. How can I best utilize my food money to feed my family good food while not depriving them of occasional treats (including fresh fruit)? What areas of my life can I streamline and lower expenses? (i.e. limiting each child to four play outfits and five nice outfits, church clothing seperate). What items in my household are taking up room that I could sell or barter for goods or money? What is the most time consuming area of my life I can streamline to leave time for the things I would like to do? I am going to be exploring these areas over the next month. I hope you will join me in this journey of introspection. Who knows, maybe you will like it!
