Co-Ops, not just for hippies anymore!

A cooperative is any group of people working toward the same goal. It can be the purchase of bulk foods for equal distribution, babysitting, carpooling, bartering of handmade items, clothing, you name it! The sky is the limit and the possibilites are endless!!!!

Need backpacks for school? Perhaps a social contact can sew you some in exchange for something you can make such as braided rugs or any other type of handmade item you can imagine.

Do you want to work part-time but feel that what it would cost you in babysitting would eliminate any profit you might gain? Find another parent or family with the same goal and switch off babysitting.

If you find yourself with wants or needs you seem unable to fill, make a list of the things that you could barter in exchange for these items or services. Make a simple flyer on your computer ( be sure to use a half sheet of paper and make us frugals PROUD!) Post them at your local food stores, libraries, and any other place in your vicinity you feel parents might be visiting.

You may find that there are other parents in your area with similiar needs and/or wants. While you may not be able to barter with them specifically, you may be able to put them in touch with someone who is able to meet their needs and vice versa.

While a short term goal may be getting your own needs met, you will find that you are building a structure in your community that brings about the kind of unity that brings about REAL change for the better.

Back in the "olden days" this is the way that communities worked. Everyone met their own very basic needs and bartered with the community at large for the more "luxerious" items such as dress making etc. Give it whirl in your town, who knows you might even find that you like it!
