ROADTRIP!!

When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was called a “roadtrip”. I am sure some, if not most, of you are familiar with the phrase. It means to take a spur of the moment trip to a moderately distant place for the simple reason that it is there and you are able. Of all the things I miss about being single and younger, this is the one I miss the most. It is possible to roadtrip after having a family and living on a budget, but it does take planning. It may not be quite as adventurous for the person in charge of the planning, but if you spring it on your spouse and children, their excitement will be contagious!

The next time your life is feeling a little too “same old, same old”, you might want to consider making the necessary preparations and whisking your family away for a good old fashioned Roadtrip.

Where to go & What to do?

There are so many free events in every state and community, no matter where you are located, you are bound to be able to find something that you can take your family to with very little cost (or only the cost of travel). If you are traveling with fairly small children, you will want to limit your driving time to under two hours, otherwise this will not be pleasant for them or you ! (Trust me I have five children, I know about this). I have created a website you can access through my links section that has a complete listing of every state that has their Tourist Bureau online. You can find monthly schedules of upcoming events (free & otherwise).

Be creative in your planning. Currently, we live only 20 minutes from the beach so this is not a particularly adventurous trip for my family, in fact it would be rather mundane. However, recently, we did “daytrip” to an island south of here, and while we did visit the beach, it was like going to another world. There are so many different types of festivals nationwide (strawberry, apple, etc.) that perhaps you could find one without traveling too far. State parks are very good roadtrip fodder for families with small children. I personally believe that amusement parks are overpriced and overrated, particularly if you have small children (under six).

Summertime is a veritable smorgasbord of roadtrips available. The state of New Jersey has a rodeo at a place called Cowtown, complete with a huge cowboy statue at the entrance. http://www.njsouth.com/index-cowtown.htm
