Declutter First and Foremost
If you have not first cleared your house of clutter, you will find your spring cleaning tedious at best. Having to stop and put this and that and the other away is going to take your time and cause you frustration. See the previous article for tips on decluttering.
Cleaning Tips
1) Dust is essentially a “dry” substance. If you do not dust your floorboards, walls, and other surfaces first they will be harder to clean when you attempt to wash them. Dust everything from sealing to floor with either a vacuum, a broom covered with cloth, or a soft bristle dust pan type brush.
2) My top “must have” cleaning items are any brand (generic preferably or purchase with coupon) soft scrub type cleaner and the green bleach type gel.. Granted these are not the most inexpensive items, however, what they save me in time and effort is well worth the money I spend. When one has more than two children, one can most assuredly count on removing crayon and a variety of other hard to remove dirt from walls, windowsills, and doors.
3) Using a cleaning “caddie” (store bought or home made), a bucket of water and rags, and a trash bag carried from room to room will again save you considerable time.
4) Create one designated area for things you are willing or need to give away. As soon as you are done cleaning, take those items to the nearest donation area.

* Air your house out as frequently as possible. This will prevent the air from becoming “stale”. While I doubt that there is scientific evidence of air going “bad”, there is something about fresh air that candles and air freshners can not duplicate
* Reuse your potpourri. The dollar type stores sell the oil used to scent potpourri for one dollar a bottle. If you put your potpourri in a plastic bag, add some oil, shake and store for at least seven days before setting out, you can reuse the same potpourri
