As I write this, one of the busiest times for travel is about to begin. Traditionally July 4th ushers in the summer travel season.
Generally, gardeners are very interested in travel. They like to visit gardens far and wide. So summer seems a fitting time to focus on gardening books with a travel-related theme. Whether we're planning a garden tour or engaging in armchair travel, travel books are great fun. "The Botanical Gardens At the Huntington" serves both of these purposes. Published jointly by the Huntington Library and Harry N. Abrams, this beautifully conceived volume will be a favorite even if you don't plan on visiting California. Whatever kinds of plants you prefer, you'll find them at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino. Each separate garden is given its own chapter with details on its origins and creation. The book is wonderfully illustrated with gorgeous full-color photos, including many close-ups of plants. Whether you love roses, herbs, tropical plants, or desert species, you'll find them at Huntington. This informative volume also includes chapters on the landmark trees, garden ornaments, and the library at Huntington. Not all gardens can withstand the ravages of time. Some of the ones profiled in "The Pleasure Gardens of Virginia-From Jamestown to Jefferson" still exist with examples being Monticello, Mt Vernon, and the ones in Williamsburg.. This engaging book is garden history at its very best. Written by Peter Martin, this would make wonderful summertime reading for gardeners. The author focuses on important historical figures of the time, such as William Byrd II and John Custis. Illustrated with drawings, maps, garden plans, and materials from the period, it was published by the University of Virginia Press. In addition to the chapters on Colonial Williamsburg and the gardens of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, the author devotes considerable space to the plantations and other early gardens of the state. Take a tour of breathtaking English gardens with the acclaimed garden writer Sir Roy Strong, author of "The Artist and the Garden." This book was published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art by Yale University Press. The author combines his expertise in art history and garden history to present an extraordinary view of three hundred years of English gardening beginning with 1540. It is lavishly illustrated with art from the period. There may be other books on English garden history, but this is the first one that tells the story by using depictions of the gardens in art.
