Grandma Parsons

still talks about when my father-in-law started dating my mother-in-law (I think they were 15 or 16 years old). When my father-in-law came to visit, there would be enough kids for two complete baseball teams.

When I get discouraged over my family's financial situation, it helps to talk to Grandma Parsons or recall the stories she tells. I've never had to scrub piles of dirty cloth diapers in the bathtub because I didn't have a washing machine. My husband and I have two cars so I can get out of the house when I feel like it. Grandma Parsons was stuck at home without transportation until Grandpa got home from work. My two daughters have always had their own bedrooms. Grandma Parsons' ten daughters had to sleep five to a bedroom and the seven boys had to sleep in an unfinished basement.

Times have changed a bit from when Grandma Parsons was raising her brood, but the knowledge we can gather from women like her is invaluable, especially for those living a frugal lifestyle.
