Top Ten Grocery Shopping Tips

I clip coupons religiously, only to find that I can get the item cheaper without the coupon by getting a different brand. A lot of the coupons I cut are for things I would never normally buy, so I look at this as a gimmick to get me to buy something I don't need. I occasionally do find a great deal with a coupon, but I find that I save more money pursuing other cost cutting ideas instead of relying solely on coupons.

9) Shop around. Some stores are consistently lower on certain items than others. Instead of being store-loyal, visit several other stores near you to see if the things you use every week are the same amount, or lower. But don't waste your time and gas driving all over town. Plan to stop at a distant store only when you are going to be in the area anyway. Then stock up.

10) Shop with cash. When I grocery shop with my checkbook, I tend to spend more. If I bring only cash...in limited amounts...I'm forced to stay in my budget. Of course, I sometimes miss out on unexpected deals because I don't have the extra money, but if I'm on a tight budget that week, I'm better off shorting myself.
