Free Lesson Plans for the Core Knowledge Series

Have you ever read any of the "What Your...Needs to Know" books? They give an excellent series of articles and resources across the curriculum. I use the Core Knowledge books as a part of my planning year to year. Now there is a site created by the Core Knowledge Foundation that features lesson plans that correlate with the Core Knowledge Series. The units and lessons were presented at recent national Core Knowledge conferences. The lesson plan files are in pdf format which is Adobe Acrobat. If you do not have this on your computer you can download it for at the Adobe Website. These lesson plans have been written and submitted by teachers and then reviewed by other Core Knowledge teachers who evaluated them. The lesson plans follow a basic format of abstract, overview, background, resources and finally the lessons. These lessons could be used as unit studies in your home, or to teach subjects your textbooks don't seem to cover. The lesson plans don't include all aspects of every book in the series but they give inventive ways to teach the subject matter. The Core Knowledge Foundation also has places to buy their materials, planners, etc. I have bought all of my Core Knowledge Books at yardsales and library booksales so far. These books seem to exchange hands pretty regularly. I think the Core Knowledge Books are great, but I don't use them as my sole curriculum planner. Like so many homeschoolers it is one of many sources that helps to know what to teach when.

Along with the Core Knowledge Foundation's page there is a link to The Baltimore Curriculum Project Draft Lessons. This is set up very nicely going from grade/month/subject . These lessons generally follow the grade-by-grade topics in the Core Knowledge Sequence, but they have been developed independent of the Core Knowledge Foundation. Don't know what to teach in September to your first grader? Baltimore Curriculum Project lays it all out for you. It is simple to follow and can be read without Adobe Acrobat. Their listings range from kindergarten through 5th grade.

Oklahoma City Public Schools also have a link on the Core Knowledge page. They have fewer units to browse through, but still some great stuff!

Finally Core Knowledge Foundation has Resources for each grade level. You will find a pdf file for books and videos that go along with the Core Knowledge Series. This would be a good one to print out and see what's available at your local library.
