Homeschoolers Give Out Free Public School Textbooks,Homeschoolers Give Out Free Public School Textbooks© Teresa Higginbotham
Somebody out there has had a wonderful idea. Schools throw out old books every year. I used to work for the public schools and I'll admit that some of the books we discarded were pretty messed up, but there were others that weren't in that bad of shape. Why did we switch books? Sometimes there was a new edition of a textbook, sometimes the historical information was out of date, sometimes the set was just plain worn out. The bindings were ripped, the pages were missing, obscenities were written into the books. What happens to these old books? We sent them to a warehouse where they were then discarded. So of course, a homeschooler got a bright idea. Why not pick up those old books and send them out to other homeschoolers..free...for the cost of shipping. What a fantastic idea.
When I hear about homeschoolers who work mainly from free resources, yard sales, libraries, and shared curriculum this site becomes just another way to educate children without paying the sometimes high prices of the educational industry. It's like a giant yardsale for curriculum. If you have never found another homeschooler's yardsale then keep looking because a good one can save you plenty of money.
"INSIGHTS is able to offer these books free to the homeschool community through generous donations and contributions from our community partners, countless volunteers and other supporting patrons." They will send the books to you for the cost of shipping them. They have collected over 13,000 books and have given them to over 400 homeschooling families. The bad news is they are moving locations right now, so the book list and ordering process are down until January 20. If you go to the site, bookmark it and come back in a few days. You can visit the site Insights at http://emcd.net/insights/index.html. You can also help out by making a donation either as an individual or if you work in a school, send them some books. Finally, in reading their mission statement you can see why they call this a ministry. "It is our goal that any and all out-of-adoption curriculums, which is no longer needed by the public school systems and publishers, be recycled into the homeschooling community making it accessible to all. We seek to eliminate 100% of the waste caused by filling landfills with these valuable educational resources when they are no longer needed. INSIGHTS intends to carry out this recycling effort starting with South Carolina and continuing nationwide."
