Our kitchens can become quickly overwhelmed with all sorts of cooking gear and utensils, plus a grand array of appliances! And, it seems, there is always something else we need - but do we, really? Can we save money through being more creative in our thinking, and using some items for more than one job?
I had some unexpected experience of this recently when shifting house. I had no choice but to use some items for more than one job, and get a bit creative in my thinking! I found this quite liberating! I realised I could have more room in my kitchen and save money through a bit of 'kiwi ingenuity' (as we New Zealander's like to say!). Here are some ideas I thought I'd share with you on certain kitchen items: - A large sieve: This can be used to drain pasta, puree soft fruits, and sieve flour. - A large roasting dish: Can be used to bake cookies, cookie bars, roasts (of course!), mixing cake or cookie ingredients, whipping cream, mixing bread dough, kneading bread dough, cooking sauces on a stove element, frying eggs, frying meat, etc. - A small roasting dish: For mixing of cakes, cookies, whipping cream (just tip the dish slightly), plus all the other things you can use the large roasting dish for! - A wok: For frying meat, stir-fries, boiling pasta or rice. - A dinnerset: We are a family of six, so we have a dinnerset for eight. And since we have regular special meals that we celebrate, we also have one other dinnerset for special occasions (which is stored away, and brought out when needed). - Cups, mugs, glasses: We mainly use mugs and glasses, but have a teacup or two for when I want to play ladies and for baking purposes. One mug, and one glass per person. We do have half a dozen wineglasses since we like a wine here and there. - Cutlery: Knives, forks, spoons, and teaspoons for eight. - Utensils: A wooden spoon, a frypan flipper (for eggs, etc), a couple of small sharp knives for chopping and cutting, an apple corer, a knife set for all other cutting and chopping, a whisk (for beating and whipping egg whites, cream, etc.), 2 or 3 serving spoons, a few select cookie cutters, plus a few other items if you really use them! - A few select baking tins: I have a cake tin, a loaf tin, 2 bread tins, and 2 muffin tins (one a mini muffin tin).
