Frugally Simplify Your Bedrooms!

We are a family of six, and are in a 3-bedroom house at present so, there isn't a lot of space! I had to get my thinking cap on and see if I could think of ways to save room and also keep our house in order. Plus, we also have to look at saving money, so the changes had to be economical and frugal!

I thought I'd share my discoveries in case some of you out there may also benefit.

CLOTHING

I wanted to save money and, if possible, not have to buy a dressing table. But, where would I put all our clothes? What could work? I looked through all our clothing and realised that many items could be hung in the wardrobe. Jumpers and tops could be folded and placed on the wardrobe shelf.

Then there were the knickers, bras, socks, scarves, hats and mittens to think of! Where could they go? I realised that these items could be placed in one or two plastic tubs at the bottom of the wardrobe. I could buy plastic tubs quite cheaply (about $4.00 each in New Zealand) which would help keep these little items nice and tidy. I was able to place the shoes neatly beside them.

To do this all successfully, I had to sort and streamline what clothes, shoes, etc they really needed; but that was fairly straightforward.

PERSONAL ITEMS

I decided my 3 daughters had way too many bits and pieces - most of which they hardly looked at let alone used! I had to think of an economical way to store these items, too. I decided that a large, flat-topped plastic container could be used here. They are economical to buy and the top could be used as a 'desk'. (My children are well used to being frugal!)

My toddler could use one of these, too, for his toys. As the Toy Libraries are really economical, I decided I would loan toys from here. That way I'd save space, plus I'd save money on buying expensive toys that they soon tire of!

BEDS

Beds can take up a lot of room in a small house, too and beds are expensive! My thoughts here were to buy foam rubber mattresses, and cover them loosely so that they could be rolled up. I will purchase these from the local thrift shop, keeping my eyes peeled for a good bargain!

BOOKS

Books can be a problem to store and get very messy quickly. So, I may buy a bookshelf for each room from a thrift shop, or I could make my own with bricks and lengths of wood.
