Frugal Baby CareWhen our little man reached 3 months old, the next problem was economical baby food. At first I managed the little containers that you buy in the supermarket, but soon he was eating so much that it was just going to be too expensive. Even the baby rice was costly the way we went through it! I searched the internet for ideas and found you can make your own baby cereal very economically. Simply buy some rolled oats and/or some brown rice. Grind it up finely in a food processor, blender, or even a coffee mill. You will need 1/2 cup of this powder to 2 cups of water. Mix together in a pot and heat it up on medium heat, stirring frequently until it has thickened. You can freeze this or simply make up enough for 2 or 3 days and refrigerate it in little containers. For fruit, meat and vegetables, I simply cooked up what was needed, pureed it with a stick blender and refrigerated it. I usually made up enough for 2 or 3 days at a time. Or, you can make bulk and freeze it in ice cube trays. Baby fruit juice is a rip off! I simply bought apple juice and grape juice (my boy wasn't very good with citrus juices) and watered them down 1/3 juice to 2/3 water. This worked out a lot cheaper. Baby wipes add up as well as having various chemicals in them that I wasn't sure about. I devised my own baby wipe formula which I would squirt onto rags or paper towels in a small container. Portable baby wipes are that easy. My formula is as follows: one 600ml squirt bottle, water to fill, 10-15 drops tea tree oil, 2 squirts of baby bath liquid (or a very mild liquid soap), and 2 tsp vegetable oil. Shake together and use. I have found this formula keeps my boy's skin healthy and if he gets nappy rash, it heals quickly in a day or two. Well, that sums up the frugal baby care in this household! I hope some of these ideas might be of use to you.
