The recent tragedy of September 11 has affected tourism all over and New Orleans is no exception. Because it is our number one industry, the ripple effect has caused many layoffs in the restaurant and hotel business. A conversation with a local cop from the 8th District (French Quarter) revealed that last weekend was hopping as usual because many are driving in to take advantage of lower rates and more specialized attention.
One tourist said, "I have been coming to New Orleans from Texas for 20 years now and this trip is like going back to a simpler time! We got to meet our chef and were treated like family at the small hotel we stayed at. The streets and shops weren't crowded like the usual fair midway they have become. It made you see and appreciate the buildings really more!"
