...And All That Jazz - Part 1

It seems only right that the city that gave birth to Jazz is seeing a renewed interest and appreciation of "Americas' original art form".

In the last few years many new and existing clubs in and around the Quarter have started featuring more and more Jazz and Blues. So, if you are looking for cool fun during New Orleans hot summer be sure to check out some of the best jazz clubs in the country.

Starting on the Canal end of Bourbon Street is one of the Quarter's newest clubs, Storyville District. Located at 125 Bourbon the club was opened by JazzFest promoter Quint Davis and Restrauant owner Ralph Brennan. Music plays day and night and except for special events is free.

Moving down Bourbon Street at 641 is the Maison Bourbon. The club features Dixieland, ragtime and traditional jazz during the afternoon and evening.

Just down the street at----- Bourbon is the Funkey Pirate, another fun spot and a hot music club.

On the border of the Quarter Rampart Street has become on of the new hot spots for jazz. Starting at 616 N. Rampart is Mamas Got the Blues and just down the street at 714 is mamas sister club, The Funky Butt. This late night club features two music areas - downstairs you can find small groups in an intimate setting while the upstairs lounge belts out hot jazz groups like Jason Marsalis.

Further down Rampart in the 800 block you will find Donna's Bar and Grill. Known as the New Orleans brass band headquarters Donna's has expanded it's music but managed to keep it's flavor and is one of the more popular night spots. Donna's is closed on Tuesdays and Wendy's.

No French Quarter jazz hunt is complete without a stop at Preservation Hall. Located at 726 St Peter Preservation Hall is one of the city's, and the worlds, best known jazz spots. The doors open at 8pm but the line starts as early as 6. There are few seats, no a.c., no drinks (bring a go-cup) and close quarters but the music draws crowds from around the world for this unique good time.

Another "don't miss" is the Palm Court Jazz Cafe at 1204 Decatur Street. A longtime venue for traditional jazz the Palm Court is a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

Right on the edge of the Quarter is El Matador located at 504 Esplanade. Featuring a popular jazz jam on Sundays and a variety of music during the week this club has become a local hangout.
