You Know It's Summer In New Orleans...


Not by the date on a calendar but when you walk out on the balcony one morning and the temperature is already in the 80's, the humidity is over 60% and that first deep breath feels moist going down.

To me, the beginning of May brings summer to the French Quarter. The normal average high for May is 84 degrees with a record high of 96 degrees. Even the evenings don't always offer relief - the average normal low is 65 degrees but temps often stay in the 70's. (we have set two record high's already this month)

To make things worse the heat index can reach over 100 degrees even this time of year. The heat index is a combination of the temperature and humidity and a measure of what hot weather "feels like" to the average person. As an example: a temperature of 95 degrees with accompanying humidity at 50% has the same affect on the body as a temperature of 107 degrees. With temperatures (or heat index) readings over 90 degrees serious health problems can occur: at 90-105 degrees heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible, from 105-130 degrees heat cramps and exhaustion are likely and heat stroke is possible. The body is absolutely dependent on water to cool itself in hot environments and can loose over a quart of water an hour in hot weather.

Effects of heat vary widely in individuals - overall health, physical fitness, weight and acclimatization can all make a difference. The Quarter is known for its parties but please remember, alcohol causes dehydration and combined with a high heat index can increase a person's susceptibility to heat exhaustion, cramps and heat stroke. These conditions can be life threatening - PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS - enjoy you vacation in the Quarter not a hospital.
