Where you got dem shoes! One more article on general information and then we can start our tour of the French Quarter. I will keep this one short and sweet but will try to pack in some good info and a few links for you. If you have any specific questions please e-mail me or use the discussion board for this article. The Quarter is only 6 X 12 blocks and is best enjoyed on foot, or perhaps in a mule drawn carriage. Other areas are easily reached by cab, bus or streetcar - the St Charles line runs from Canal St. to South Carrollton, the Riverfront line runs from the Convention Center to the French market - the Regional Transit Authority runs busses throughout the metro area. Streetcar and bus fares are $1.25 ($1.50 for riverfront streetcar) and special passes can be purchased, "visitour Passes" $5.00 one day, $12.00 3 day. Driving - Bringing your car to the Quarter can be a real hassle - On street parking can be next to impossible to find, if you do find one watch the signs. The parking laws are quickly enforced and tickets and towing are common. Off Street parking can be expensive, even at your hotel. Louisiana is now actively enforcing seat belt and insurance laws so be sure to bring your registration and proof of insurance, if you forget your car may be confiscated. I have also heard horror stories from out of state drivers about being arrested for forgetting their license so make sure you have that with you also. I you must drive please - for all of us DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE Coming from the Airport: New Orleans international airport is about 30 minutes outside the Quarter and Downtown area. A taxi from the airport is $21.00 for one or two people (starting next month this will be $25.00), three or more is $8.00 each ($10.00 starting next month). Also available is the airport shuttle which will deliver you to your hotel for $10.00 per person. Arriving by train The union passenger terminal is about 10 blocks from the Quarter and downtown hotel area - a short cab ride! And yes, you can still ride the "City of New Orleans" with Amtrak. Taking the bus to New Orleans The Greyhound/Trailways bus terminal is next door to the Union Passenger Terminal. The New Orleans police do a very good job of keeping the Quarter safe but their are a few things you should keep in mind...
