Personalising Windows 95

Donovan Olivier, native of Johannesburg, South Africa. I will leave it to him to introduce you to his fair city and country in his own words! He devotes as much space to personal information as he does his programs. Some unique links are offered to people who have obviously had quite an impact on his life... or he on theirs. Arguably some, if not all, of his "jokes" are specific to his country but you certainly get his opinion of political correctness!

Make no mistake, he is a professional programmer giving away a very professional program. We are both "kack - handed," which is Anglo-saxon for "lefties." I enjoyed an e-mail conversation with him about a lefthanded version of the program. An amusing discussion turned quite serious when I became specific and he offered to check out one of my suggestions. If you want to know more about this, start a discussion. You may have some good ideas that can be passed on.

I asked Donovan for a quote for this article and under the e-mail "handle" of Der Untermensch (subhuman) I received the following, completely in character!

My web site pretty much covers what I'm about, which is all attitude. The software is all free because I write programs for fun, not for profit. I get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that because More Properties is free, some shareware author of an alternative program is making less money.

Check out the program, check out the author.

My next offering on July 14, 1998.

One of the most useful windows within a program is the about screen. This is usually tucked behind the help tab on the main window tool bar.

This can merely be factual and show the program version number and perhaps a note of the authors name. In addition it will very often quote an e-mail and home page address. The ones that start to get me interested are where the author also uses this window for a personal message.

The next author I will be telling you about has included a biblical quotation. This is not unusual, but when he also includes photographs of his wedding and honeymoon on his home page I'm starting to like the guy already. It tells me here's someone not into anonymity, and maybe would like to be as well known as his program.

See you in two weeks.

P.S. Unless I tell you to the contrary, all the programs
