Vampires - Part 2

© Brian Hughes

The Vampire has now landed
With wife and children too
He's hard at work, they have a home
But lots more still to do ?

Now where were we?? ah yes. If you didn't catch the beginning of this story read Vampires Part 1.

In the middle of January we finally got to meet a very weary Alex, wife Lora, son Al and daughter Alla. Brand new Permanent Residents complete with all their worldly possessions, the equivalent of about 5 suitcases! Their journey had been a long one. From home in The Crimea to the Canadian Embassy in Kiev to collect their Visas, then an overnight wait at the airport for a very early flight to Paris. After a 3-hour layover they finally flapped their wings for Canada and celebrated with Champagne during the flight. Understandably they passed on a stop at Tim Hortons on the final leg home? they were fast asleep in the car!

After a good night's rest they were all up early. Alex and his son were glued to our computer, Lora was trying to unpack with the help of our four cats, Alla and our dog were cementing love at first sight. Alex's first priority was to post his resume on the Internet. Copies were dropped off at several employment agencies and left with individual companies where vacancies looked interesting, all without leaving the computer. Beats burning shoe leather and gas, and a lot of companies, not only high tech outfits, are going for this now.

Because of his skills and experience it took less than a week to line up his first job interview and one interview was enough. Four hours later they e-mailed an offer of employment.! They wanted him to start work in just over a week? in Richmond Hill, Toronto. That's about 100 miles away? not exactly commuting distance! Some negotiation was necessary to get him what he wanted, and what we knew he needed, but we got there in the end.

House hunting was a little rushed, buying furniture was even worse, they still only have four dining room chairs to sit on, and a car is on the wish list along with driving licenses. However a computer got bought very quickly! A professional programmer all his working life - this was the first computer he had owned. Again, it makes you think! In the middle of all of this, Lora discovered Canadian shops, Supermarkets and Debit Cards and the children discovered Frosted Flakes, Ice cream, and fresh bananas and oranges.
