I've learned to answer to many names over the years, some less flattering than others, and this one got added to the list a while ago.

The details aren't particularly relevant... I'll settle for saying it was in connection with my making the acquaintance of the local officer of the law... the one with all the pretty flashing lights on top of his cruiser!

Thankfully the story had a happy ending but it did make me yearn somewhat for the European highways where speed limits have far less of an impact on a driver's timetable compared to North America.

A particularly fast driver I've never been but I have always been one for extra dials and gauges where available, especially where they help improve performance. The same goes for computers and in both cases the appearance is far more impressive while some of them are actually quite useful.

Which finally brings me to my point.

Windows has always had a few bits and pieces with which to monitor resources and system performance but they've never amounted to very much in my opinion, so I've always gone for after- market add on stuff. I had my attention drawn to a new freebie the other day which might look good on your dashboard as well.

CacheMaster

"CacheMaster makes it simple to optimize your system memory. CacheMaster allows you to configure your disk cache and other settings to squeeze maximum performance from your system, and comes loaded with a number of preset configurations as well. CacheMaster has an easy-to-use interface which displays realtime readouts of memory and system usage. All this for the low, low price of nothing! NOTE: this program was designed for Windows 95/98, but according to Microsoft Windows ME handles it's file cache exactly the same so CacheMaster should run fine there as well. In fact, Windows ME essentially IS Windows 98, with a few tiny differences."

What impressed me as much as the specification and appearance of the program is the additional information the author has provided on the home page. This whole business of monitoring and fine tuning system resources is complicated and as even I don't understand a lot of it I found what the author had to say very interesting and informative.

As well as explaining what the program does, he goes out of his way to answer the why of it.

CacheMaster isn't unique and it's always nice to have a choice.

A similar program, also freeware, is one that has been around for quite some time, and one I've had installed right from the very beginning.
