Just BrowsingNow where was I before last week's slight detour? Netscape 6. Being the Netscape browser fan that I am I was delighted to see the production - Gold - version finally released. My original experience with PR1 (the first pre- release beta) wasn't very favourable and didn't last very long at all... my system hated it. I was hoping for far better results this time if only because I love the fact that it's a lot smaller and has many new features. Installation went very smoothly using the small "utility" program to download which parts I wanted. An almost identical procedure as with Internet Explorer. I opted for a custom install because some components I would never use but other than that I followed all the recommended default settings. The program was installed into the existing Netscape folder on my hard drive where Communicator 4.76 already resides but in all other respects would remain quite separate. As I understood the installation notes a new copy of my Users folder would be created so that 6 would have all my profile details (Bookmarks, Personal Tool Bar, Mail Boxes & Address Book) ready and waiting for me. The folder was indeed created but sad to say nothing was set up for me when I finally opened up the browser... not a good start. What annoyed me even more was the incredible length of time the program took to load. While my system can't be described as leading edge any more it is a Pentium 11 with 128 mgs of memory... there's a lot of slower systems out there. Way, way slower to open than 4.76. I shall continue to persevere and fiddle, the appearance is a lot better and I'm still very impressed with the significant decrease in size. That alone is progress in the right direction. Tips and Tricks are beginning to be offered already at various sites, you might like to check out this CNet one which includes a download link as well. "If you've made the jump to Netscape 6, you've probably noticed a few disturbing--er, interesting--changes." While talking of NS 6, I'm going to get a little technical for a moment but as my own personal programming mental block kicks in here I'll try and keep it as simple as possible, for my benefit as much as yours. As soon as you start reading up on this new browser you will very quickly trip over another name ; Mozilla.
