"With Preview Release 3, Netscape 6 is inching ever closer to a final version. Stick a fork in it--it's almost done."
This Cnet progress report does a nice job of updating the latest news on the next major incarnation of the Netscape browser. PR 3 (preview release is the posh word for beta) is the most recent step towards the final version... due out around the end of this year. Back in April (Medium is Good) I gave you my first impressions of the original PR 1 and had to mention that it didn't sit very well on my system. That happens with early versions and shortly after I had comments from quite a few people drawing attention to the fact that there was no uninstall feature. This had caused quite severe problems in some cases. For these reasons I passed on PR 2 but being an avid fan and user of Netscape Communicator I have been following the updates very closely. I plan on switching to the "Gold" production version as soon as it is released. Along with Communicator I use Messenger as my main E-mail client program and perhaps the most common complaint has been the fact that at the moment it only handles a single mail account. This shortcoming is fixed in Netscape 6. The complete program is also a lot smaller than current versions of both Netscape and Internet Explorer and as I'm always saying, that is finally a step in the right direction. Cnet's page does include links to other related information and one in particular takes you to their forum where you can find out what a lot of people are having to say. I fear I can't tell you whether this latest release is any easier to remove so if anybody out there knows I'll be delighted to pass it on. Recently I've been talking about SpyWare and Adware and I want to take the opportunity to give a plug to my wife Dee who, among a lot of other work, writes the leaders to the weekly newsletter over at Freeware Home. She wrote on this very subject recently and with her permission I'm reproducing it here. Yes I get a nice juicy well done steak for this but Yes I think it's one of the best pieces I've seen on the subject. "I'm going to add a little clarification this week to the subject of Advertiser supported programs, spyware, & removing spyware.
