It's a Screensaver...

It's a "personalised" refrigerator door... it's how my real desk top looks on any given day...it's...

MyCorkboard

"It's a FREE Interactive PC Screen Saver..."

At the risk of sounding picky I'll mildly question this "screensaver" designation because I don't see the normal animation that helps protect a monitor screen. The whole purpose of a screensaver (as the name implies) is to prevent images being burned into the phosphor coating on the inside of the monitor tube. Hence the continuously moving display.

This concern is mitigated by the fact that one of the general settings within the program does allow for the launching of a conventional screensaver after a selectable period of time.

In my opinion MyCorkboard is better described as a desktop... sort of... kind of. As such, it's quite a fascinating freebie and in terms of personalisation potential I haven't seen anything to touch it.

As you will see from the site, registration is required but this is free and only contact information is requested. It's easy to see how they plan on earning their money. A lot of free downloadable files are offered to help personalise your very own Corkboard and another list offers shareware versions as well, for a fee.

Just out of curiosity I followed the link to the additional registration page to see what was involved for these "Premium Add ons." This is normally a secure credit card transaction but at the time of writing this a special deal was available.

Provided I signed with the free Dash Online Shopping Service the standard fee was waived but I had to use Internet Explorer and have it set as my default browser. I was also required to download and install the "Dash Bar" into IE.

In re- registering with MyCorkboard for access to the Premium files they do confirm that actual use of the Dash service was not required. I can also tell you that there is then nothing to stop you removing the Dash file and restoring another browser as your default... if you so choose.

If the offer is still available at the time you read this, I leave it to you to decide if the effort is worth it. The list of free add on files is quite comprehensive and it takes quite a lot of viewing to compare these with the additional ones.

All in all this is a fun program that can also prove to be very useful. You can have your screen look as tidy or untidy as your desk / fridge or achieve a distinct contrast.
