And Back Again

© Brian Hughes

Last week from the tiny to the huge, so this week I'm going back the other way but in slightly more moderation. From big to small.

If you are into playing with image files such as graphics and photos there is a shareware program that is very much a market leader and very well known. For a time you can get to try it out for a longer period than just a demonstration version.

Paint Shop Pro

"The world's most popular image-editing software gets even better!"

This is the public release of the beta version of the next incarnation : Version 7. I'm always nervous about mentioning beta programs, if only because the word that Jasc, the authors, use to describe it ; experimental.

If you're not used to trying out beta programs I strongly recommend you read the Legal notice on the page and also check through the links in the beta info. pop up window. These versions can be quite scary in terms of how badly or how well they run on any one system so if this makes you nervous as well, you should pass.

Having said that, I know from my own experience that the forerunner to the current production version, beta 6 was very stable and 7 is quite likely to be the same. Dee has been using PSP 5 for a long time now and is perfectly happy with it but I think she will be a having a look to see if the upgrade is worthwhile.

The download is quite big at 30mbs but you get an awful lot of program.

Unfortunately you don't get to hang onto it I'm afraid... the beta version will time out on you and stop working. The program is intended to go "Gold" (enter production) on September 1st so I would expect the beta to time out around the end of August. That does give you over a month to check it out and obviously Jasc are hoping you won't bear to part with it and buy it.

From 30 mbs. to .30mbs.... 333k to be precise.

I'm a sucker for E-mail checker tools... anything that will help me monitor incoming mail and sort what I want to download from what I want to trash straight away. With the amount of mail I get these days I need all the help I can get with "front end Processing" before opening my mail client program. This one caught my eye for this very reason.
