Going, Going...

The trail to this week's title is a bit tortuous but please bear with me.

From time to time I help out Dee and her partners with monitoring, and posts where I have something to contribute, over on the Freewarehome Forums. Recently, a couple of messages were added asking for help with removing the Pre Release version of Netscape 6 and this reminded of my own recent article : Medium is Good.

I wasn't negative about it at the time nor was I especially complimentary... particularly as it didn't stay on my system for very long. What the forum posts reminded me of was that, unlike the existing production versions, there was no delete option in either the Start Menu program group or on the Control Panel Add / Remove Programs page.

This didn't really register with me at the time because I tend not to rely on these options anyway. I've learned to use either of the dedicated uninstaller programs I have on board. Names I won't mention because they're both shareware, and they get plenty of plugs anyway.

Removing a program can be a real pain if only because many of them spread bits and pieces all over the place. In fact, I'm a great believer in one of the tests of quality of a program being how well it removes itself from the premises when asked to leave. There's a lot of software, not only freeware, that fails this test miserably!

This refreshing of my memory sent me searching for what is obviously still not out there... in my opinion anyway... a good quality freebie uninstaller. I trip over various offerings from time to time but these seem to involve backing up the registry prior to installing something and restoring the copy in order to remove it. That doesn't really impress me and the last way to remove an unwanted item is to go into Windows Explorer and merely delete the program folder.

As I always say... if I'm missing a freebie that fits the bill please do let me know but it looks as if this is another Holy Grail quest.

Talking of which...

I used this search description almost exactly a year ago : The perfect Desktop

Other than mentioning that the article talked about Desktop Architect I'll leave you to pop back and see what I said at the time.

As proof of the fact that no freeware Internet search is a waste of time in my book, I did notice during the aforementioned quest that a new version of Desktop Architect was recently released and it's now better than ever.
