Spyware

© Brian Hughes

I need to start with some more heavy stuff this week as a follow up to my recent Adware article. As I don't really want to repeat everything I said previously you might like to refresh your memory before reading on.

One thing I did mention was that the Adware name was entering the mainstream as the description for this kind of advertising supported freeware. Having received an update from someone I mention quite frequently - Steve Gibson I get the impression that another software type identifier is being coined... Spyware.

As I always do, I'm going to defer to Steve's far greater knowledge and experience on this subject and limit myself to saying that a single page for his OptOut utility has now expanded into becoming virtually it's own website with a dozen pages. A lot of reading material here but if this topic concerns you, like it does me, it's required reading.

It seems to be almost inevitable that once a technology is "invented" by an industry... it will be used.

Now to start to lighten things up a bit.

An incoming E-mail the other day from someone looking for a new angle on WAP (Wireless Application / Access protocol) cellphones reminded me a little of the crystal ball gazing I did last week, and another "vision" I should have added.

Ever since I discovered that the scanning buzz word TWAIN translated into "Technology Without An Interesting Name" I have always had a strong affection for zany names and my latest favourite is Bluetooth.

Despite the weird name (which is explained on the website) this again is all about wireless Internet connections. Of particular interest to all mobile users obviously, but I have picked up on one aspect that will appeal to the vast house / office bound majority of us ordinary users. Bluetooth is very much about short range communication using a new frequency of 2.4 Ghz. and has the potential to finally do away with the problem of the knitting we all indulge in when it comes to the cables we have to cope with... usually under the desk.

Speaking as a multiple systems user running a LAN with almost every periphery known to man and computer tomorrow will do very nicely. Last week would have been even better, we've finally moved into our permanent home in Nova Scotia and another home office had to wired up. More accurately... cabled up!
