Blinking Bookmarks

This article comes under the heading of more spring cleaning... sort of.

Well, it should be done at least once every millennium and it's depressing to see most of my bookmarks / favourites dating back to the last century!

What really started this was noticing that my chosen utility for handling these... URLmenu... has deserted the ranks of freeware in favour of the shareware enemy camp. This is being a bit harsh because as I've said before authors are entitled to earn a living but I do wish more of them would leave an earlier version as a freebie. The new version does include more features but I'm quite happy with the older one.

I've had to remove URLmenu from my "I Use Them" links category which sent me looking for a replacement. What I found was quite interesting...

Blink

While this site is pretty much all about bookmarks I found it quite difficult to categorise. If you take a look round then hopefully you will see what I mean... if nothing else click on the Why Blink? button at the top of the page. Then, sit back and just watch the show!

My first impression was that this was a site for creating home pages because you have to become a member. My second impression was that this was a "backup" site for important files. The emphasis however is on creating a copy of all your bookmark links but taking things a stage further by making your links to other members. You, in turn, have access to all the others.

Quite an intriguing idea... see what you think for yourself. At the very least it will give you access to your own bookmarks from any other computer, and that can prove very handy.

Tidying up bookmarks also means checking whether or not they are up to date or even still around... another chore.

If you're looking for a more conventional program to manage your links then take a look at :-

Check&Get.

"Check&Get is a Windows Explorer-like bookmark manager which allows you to easily organize, catalogue, and manage an unlimited number of your favorite bookmarks, imported from Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator."

What makes this program different is that it combines these functions with the ability to check the links as well... how about that!

"Save your time! It's better to work or to play than waste your time keeping up-to-date with the latest news, downloads, your favorite web-pages or trying to clean up your bookmark collection from out-of-date invalid links. You do not need to do it anymore! Check&Get will do this boring job automatically for you!"
