Sounds Good

My mention, last week, of connecting our two computer systems together into a Local Area Network (LAN) led to a couple of enquiries that made me realise something. I know the theory but not having actually done it before I'm short on practice.

Before I started dispensing advice I had better do some more digging... it didn't take me long.

LAN Connections.

"Helping two PCs find love in a home network.

Your PC is lonely. Night after night it hums quietly to itself while shuffling windows, processing polygons, and sorting e-mail. Random encounters across modem lines can't satisfy it anymore. It longs for permanent connections. It wants commitment. So it casts furtive glances at the PC across the hall. Thoughts of hot data-swapping make it jump a clock cycle."

I found this article, and the others linked to it very useful indeed. As you can well imagine there are both hardware and software requirements but the step by step walk through is easy to follow.

There's also mention of "low tech." considerations such as running the connecting cable but that doesn't apply to us. While Dee and I need two of everything that doesn't extend yet to separate offices so we can save money by not having to invest in a wireless connection. They are available however.

I know this subject is somewhat off topic but if anyone has information to throw into the pot I would be glad to hear from you. Better still, start a discussion thread.

Back to freeware.

I've mentioned from time to time my fascination with voice / speech recognition software. Once restricted to large mainframe computers, it's extending down to desktops to an increasing extent. Price - wise it's getting cheaper to the point that there are freebies around.

Here's the latest I've tripped over.

mySpeech Scout

"This page gives you a complete overview of all the information services offered by mySpeech Scout."

Welcome to mySpeech Scout!

The system requirements seem to be quite modest and provided you have a multimedia system with a microphone you will be ok. At 1meg. the download file is quite small for this kind of program.

At present it's aimed very much at US users so being in Canada I haven't tried it yet but I will be very interested in getting some feedback. If you're one for talking to your computer... shades of Star Trek... it could be fun.

Finally, I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays. May all our wishes come true and may we all get what we deserve!
