Mutter... Mutter... Mutter

No not me... my other half Dee sitting at her computer six feet away.

I don't have to actually hear what she's muttering... the body language and the pounding of the mouse on the keyboard tells me what she's doing. Checking for broken links... a regular chore and one she hates with a passion!

Well, with thirty thousand program links to check for broken ones, it doesn't really get any worse. It's a problem that all of us with web sites containing more than a handful of links face from time to time, but it needs to be done... if only to keep visitors happy.

This time the muttering didn't last long... in fact it was very subdued and I find out this was thanks to a new program that Dee had used.

Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM)

"Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM) is a spidering software that checks Web sites for broken links. Link verification is done on "normal" links, images, frames, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and applets. It displays a continuously updated list of URLs which you can sort by different criteria. A report can be produced at any time."

There's plenty of information on the home page and the answers to all the obvious questions, in a FAQ section.

Any broken links on a web site create a bad impression so it's important to check them at regular intervals. This program will help you deal with this chore... and possibly save your system a beating!

On a totally different subject I am again obliged to my good friend Arnvid Aakre over in Professional Travel for a very interesting link.

Shields UP!

I found this site quite fascinating because it involves very important Internet issues such as security and protection. Although a lot of this is very technical in nature I was very impressed with the plain language used. I'll give you an example.

What's a Firewall?

"A firewall ABSOLUTELY ISOLATES your computer from the Internet using a "wall of code" that inspects each individual "packet" of data as it arrives at either side of the firewall - inbound to or outbound from your computer - to determine whether it should be allowed to pass or be blocked."

What interests me the most is all the information on networks. I have on my "to do" list the job of connecting my system to Dee's to give us better access to files and file sharing. In doing this I have to be absolutely certain that the rest of the Internet world doesn't get the same access and there's a lot of advice and tips on this very subject.
