Game OverMy love affair with computer chess didn't last very long I'm afraid. Nothing wrong with the program, it's me and my lack of patience. My attention span for board games has never been very good... I get bored very quickly, unless I'm winning. I also have a very nasty suspicion I'm getting too old for lightning chess... maybe I should have a look for a checkers program? Back to business... for a while anyway. If Netscape Communicator is your surfing weapon of choice the latest version has crept up from 4.61 to 4.7. Here's one of the best update reviews I've seen and as you will see it's mostly tweaks although a couple of new features will appeal to music buffs and shopaholics. I really do wonder when it will make it's way up to V.5 but I doubt it will be this millennium! I tripped over a program launching utility the other day called Sensiva. It started bells ringing for me and I realised it was very similar to a utility program that came with my touch pad. Checking back through my articles I see I told you about it in No Moving Parts. Unlike smARTwriter which only works with my particular pad Sensiva will work with any pointing device... including an ordinary mouse. You only have to sit and watch the graphics running on the web site to see how the program works. It's an application launcher driven by a letter or symbol traced on the screen... call it gimmicky if you like although your kids (or the kid in you) just might go for it as being cute. Sensiva make it work by the use of plug-ins for different application software. They do have you register on the site to gain access to the download area for the program itself and the plug-ins. This seems to be quite an innocent requirement and they do offer some other features as well including a free draw. User groups are something else they're working on and users are encouraged to help increase the range of programs for which a plug-in is available. Again nothing that will change the world but there's a definite novelty value. I got an E-mail the other day from a site I'm always pleased to hear from... it usually means another good quality freebie added to the list. They have indeed added a new one : FontLoader. As you can see this is a limited time offer before the program becomes shareware. If playing with fonts is your thing then you should give it a try. I can highly recommend all of their programs... I use most of the freebies so take a close look at what else is available.
