Chat Hater.

Yep, that's me I'm afraid... the Internet kind anyway.

It's not that I'm anti-social, far from it, but the problem for me is that I can type, or I can read... but not at the same time. I would happily chat away with anyone who types slower than I do... but I'm quite satisfied in my own mind that such people don't exist.

Give me E-mail or discussion posts any time... at least I have time to think!

Having said all that I have just found a chat type program that even for me will be too useful to pass up. Unlike the well known ones like ICQ and PowWow it associates itself with your browser. It provides a "chat room" environment for you and your friends at any mutually agreed upon web site. Definitely a novel approach.

The name, Gooey, now there's a title to catch the imagination! What will do it even more is the graphics and the colour scheme used on their website... very interesting! There is a great deal of enthusiasm on display here.

Gooey is a groundbreaking Internet tool enabling people simultaneously browsing the same Web site to communicate with each other

This statement really caught my eye because I see a great potential for it being very helpful when developing a web site with a group of people. Something Dee and I are involved in right now and even I accept that chatting is one thing... business is another.

The download page provides details of which version you need depending on your browser of choice and outlines the installation and registration process. As far as I can see it differs very little from other programs. Also provided is a good explanation of each program window and the purpose it serves. There is a link to a very comprehensive list of FAQ's that will answer most questions.

Whether or not this program ends up providing any real competition for the big guys remains to be seen... it's up to the expert chatters to decide this. Personally I give it a good chance of establishing a niche market for itself and these days that seems to be the way to go.

Hypernix, the company that produces Gooey is an Israeli outfit and I think you will agree they come across as a very dynamic group of people. I seem to remember that ICQ started in that part of the world, must be something to do with the climate... or the water?
