Bits n Pieces

Not the most original of titles but the most accurate for this week.

As I mentioned last week there are a number of things on the go at the moment and I'm nowhere near as good as the computer at multi tasking. My normal surfing schedule having been well and truly disrupted I'm going to settle this week for some odds and ends and a small meander back into hardware.

Having been sat down in front of my first computer keyboard about thirty five years ago I made what I considered to be a very reasonable request. Any chance of replacing it with one with the numeric pad on the other side... I'm left handed? "In your dreams" was the answer I vaguely remember... or at least the politest one.

This particular dream finally came true. Playing musical computers left me needing a new keyboard... I'm too used to the split variety to switch back to the conventional type. This is all to do with AT versus PS/2 connections... very boring! Surely, I thought, some kind considerate manufacturer has finally recognised that me and my kind are not going the way of the Dodo.

Just have a look at this. Mine arrived today and I LOVE IT. It's taking forever for me to type this article because a few keys are in different places but it's a small price to pay. It's also nice to get there in the end... what's 35 years???

Back to business.

Two weeks ago I was into watching clocks... more than one at a time. Thanks to my good friend Arnvid I can point you to another good looking freebee and one that will synchronise your system clock as well.

World Time : I think cat lovers will like this site... go have a look.

Emptying out my new hard drive is leaving plenty of room for all my stuff. Moving systems has also involved a switch to Windows 98 and my first reaction was... what's the big deal? The more things change, the more they stay the same?

Installing programs the way I've been doing the last few days pointed out one shortcoming that still exists. Win98 was adding all the necessary shortcuts to the Start Menu but the alphabetical order was again screwing up. A utility that will restore the correct order for you is Menuzap.

Nothing to change the world and their is a slight drawback. This program uses an onboard Microsoft Java file and unless your version of Windows is the absolute latest you will have to download the new version of this file. It's a rather large one to download (6 mgs) but it won't take up that much room on your hard drive because it overwrites the older file. I'm glad I did... this program tidy's up nicely. Menuzap gives you all the information you need during the installation.

What better way to get the real answer than from an expert... the author, and I'm relieved I wasn't far off.

Thanks for taking the time to respond ...

I'm in grave danger of getting in over my head here because programming and languages are just not my thing. As I've said in a past article... I'm allergic to the lot of it.
