Up Periscope.

I've talked before about the chicken and egg situation I face sometimes with articles and titles... which comes first. Occasionally another situation occurs... having a choice. Where both will fit the article the selection method is obvious... flip a coin.

What lost out this week is Rocket Science Part Two. With this one I would have started with program and finished with an update to the weather situation. Now all I have to do is write this the other way round.

This winning title is quite fitting because I'm sitting here in the increasing gloom conducting a feasibility study. This is into the practicality of shoving my WebCam up the chimney and checking my monitor to see what's happening out there! The snow, you see, is creeping up the windows. This latest round, for a change, is not an Alberta Clipper but a Southern Belle courtesy of our US cousins. Fifty pretty little stars to the proverbial head of the pin.

Anyway, to business. Another program that fits the same profile I used last week.

I latch on to the promise that it will enrich my computing life and then I look for signs that enough people agree that it does. This tells me the author can be trusted when he says "press this idiot button" and all will be taken care of. Provided I then get a noticeable improvement... I'm happy.

iSpeed : High Mountain Software. Now there's appropriate!

The idiot button in this case is Optimal and this is the one I hit. Very subjectively, my connection seems to be faster and I'm quite content to ride with this. The authors' own words tell me why.

The settings for TCP/IP connections established when installing Windows 95/98\NT do not give you the optimal throughput for your Internet dialup networking connections. The simple changes that are facilitated by using iSpeed can easily increase your throughput by 30% or more! What does that mean? Faster web browsing, faster downloads, quicker action for those internet multiplayer games!

The four program windows: Settings : Testing : History : Analysis are full of wonderful Rocket Science. The home page does a very good job of translating all this into a list of features and FAQ's. If by chance you want to check out the tech. talk first, there is a nice set screen shots there as well.

The on board help file is also very easy to follow.

Definitely give this one a try.
