Rocket Science

Do you have days when you think you'll never get the hang of all this Tech. Talk that goes with computers and software? If so, don't get too depressed... spare a kind thought for those of us who have been trying for decades.

My favourite use of the Rocket Science expression is to describe programs where I stand little or no chance of really understanding what it does and how it does it. I latch on to the promise that it will enrich my computing life and then I look for signs that enough people agree that it does. This tells me the author can be trusted when he says "press this idiot button" and all will be taken care of. Provided I then get a noticeable improvement, I'm happy.

Cacheman fits this profile perfectly for me. Author : Thomas Reimann : Ultimatum Productions.

The best way to describe the what and how of the program is to quote the author's own words.

Cacheman is a utility which tweaks the disk cache settings and prevents frequent swapping of the data to disk resulting in an improved performance.

One of the biggest faults of Windows 9x is the disk cache management strategy. After all the available physical memory (RAM) is exhausted Windows 9x starts to use virtual memory instead of flushing the disk caches which puts a drain on your system.

In order to correct this chaotic and weird behavior you need to edit the SYSTEM.INI file. Cacheman changes all that! No more mucking about in the SYSTEM.INI file manually.

You just need to run Cacheman and select your optimization method and reboot your system after saving the changes. Some users have experienced up to 25% boost in their system performance.

The optimization method referred to is selecting between : Standard : CD Writer : Power User : Low Memory System : Games and between Win.95 and 98. The help file is all it should be.

Installation is nice and simple and the program is very professional looking. The information and data is very interesting even If I don't understand it all.

I definitely have fewer problems now so I'm very happy and, always more importantly, so is Dee. This one is going straight on my I Use Them list and I commend it to you.

Check out the home page... there's a lot of other interesting stuff... I'm certainly going back.

This program is Postcardware and I hope Thomas will settle for a copy of this article. I say this because for the last few days I haven't seen my mail box... in fact I haven't even seen the road! I'm told that Siberia now lies between here and the Post Office.

Used the older version and recently updated. Newer has more features, but that brings up the question how does the user 'know' it works, ..speeds up things?
Logically, I'd change the settings, altho ...
