Small is Beautiful : Part Four.

I'm going to stretch the "small" definition a bit this week by starting off with my favourite browser, Netscape Communicator In case you've missed it, an update has been released to the production version. Number-wise it's now up to 4.07.

FLASH. Talk about keeping up with things! Since starting this article a few days ago, Netscape released the production version of Communicator 4.5. And I suggest you go for this one. If you use the stand alone Navigator, then upgrade to 4.07.

The quickest way for existing users to upgrade is by using Smart Update. The download file is about half the size of the full version and the installation is automatic. Having run into a couple of problems, I'll pass on some tips if you go this route.

I had my downloading of this file interrupted a couple of times by security violations but I was able to fix this by suspending mail checking. Also, the Smart Update routine "lost" my version selection on two occasions. Netscape technical support told me this was probably due to a corrupted cookie. Make sure you set your browser preferences to accept all cookies and disable any cookie monitoring program. My problem was using CookiePal.

This new version doesn't amount to a great deal... just a couple of fixes. But I like to keep current and, although it might be my imagination, I think it's faster.

To throw in a quick bit of trivia, the author is English and "Gaffers" are "rustic old gentlemen."

I've said a few times I like to know what's running on my computer at any time, particularly in the background. This is mostly for technical reasons... but I'm also nosy! We all have programs sitting in our Start Up Folder so that they load with Windows but these are not the only ones. Other programs can also launch "tasks" that sometimes we need to know about. I'm sure you've had program windows that won't close because the task quits responding and the last thing you want to do is to shut down and restart Windows. Put simply, this program lists everything that is running and allows you to control each item individually.

There are links to a couple of reviews on the home page and I agree with them. Give it a try.
